| From a systemic standpoint, what is the rib-type based waveguide is used for? |
The purpose why rib waveguide is chosen is because light confinement is better in rib waveguide and to make the device active, rib waveguide is needed which required negative and positive terminal. This is the only waveguide with tunable function. This active waveguide analysis can be useful for active device such as tunable optical attenuator, tunable phase shifter, optical switch, micro-ring modulator, tunable filter. |

| Silicon core width is recommended to be set at around 500nm in order to achieve a good compromise between effective index and polarizations, which system can benifit in this compromise? |
In terms of Effective Index, the higher the width, the higher the effective index. However, higher width may introduce higher order TE and TM polarized modes. So, 500 nm is a good compromise to get better index but avoid higher order TE and TM polarized modes. |

| Have other researchers done the similar simulation before? And what is the feature of your simulation? |
Other researchers performed simulation focusing on single polarization mode. The novelty of this paper is that simulation is performed on both single mode and higher order mode. This is because we do not want undesirable higher-order modes which result in more noise and losses. If only single order is simulated, then we might not know if higher order will come in at that specific dimension. In addition to that, the study of the performance of each mode is required as different device will need different performances, that is why we need to find it out by carrying out simulation on not only single but higher order mode. |
