What is the motivation of this paper? Have not other team done similar simulations before? Due to the enormous consumption of the power usage at the access network especially at the ONU reside at the user, several techniques are conducted and tested to reduce this consumption. Therefore, this paper simulates one technique using fast sleep mode using MATLAB code for the TDM system in which some other team also done similar simulation either using different software or for different types of PON Technologies.

What is the difference between your fast sleep mode simulation and other people's simulation ? The simulation is conducted more on the sensitive delay traffic like VoIP, online gaming, video conferencing or web browsing which require less latency and QoS. Moreover, this simulation have not also considered the presence of the upstream traffic and function detecting idle periods of downstream transmission. Further research/simulation will be done to detect if the coming traffic is either voice, data or video so as to determine how much power can be save using this technique.

Have you assessed how much power consumption fast sleep mode can save? From slide 15, In the interval between ~10.5ms and ~80ms average inter-arrival time, Method 1 shows better energy saving capabilities than Method 2. however when the average inter-arrival time gets very high, both Methods show the same performance in terms of power. In this simulation, it is assumed that power consumed during active ONU is 10W and during sleep state is 2W. Further assessing of how much power is saved to be carried out and it should be more that 50% of power save.

Hello, what are the characteristics of the sleep mode optical network unit? ONU sleep mechanisms periodically turn ONU transmitter components off to reduce unnecessary energy consumption. Although ONU sleep mechanisms can greatly improve the situation in that aspect, they also introduce additional delay and enlarge the latency of the connection. When the ONU has traffic to send or receive, it is in active mode, otherwise, it is in sleep mode. When the ONU is an active mode, it can send or receive data traffic but consumes more energy. Whilst the ONU is in sleep mode, it consumes much less energy but cannot receive any downstream traffic transmitted by OLT. Therefore, the sleep period should be carefully assigned in order to avoid missing any incoming packets.

Hello, thank you for the presentation, can you explain to us the operating mode of a PON and what are the new features that you bring compared to those which existed? PON is a single, shared optical fiber that uses inexpensive optical splitters to divide the single fiber into multiple endpoints (individual subscribers). Optical Networks are "passive" because there are no active electronics within the access network except for at the Central Office and subscriber endpoints. Another benefit, there is less fiber required than in point-to-point topologies and provides triple services: data, voice and video. The simulation is based on fast sleep mode technique at ONU resides at the client for energy saving at the access network of PON of TDM technologies.
