What are the benefits of TSMC's 0.18-μm CMOS process for making Ka-band antennas in terms of scalability and performance? The TSMC 0.18-μm CMOS technology process is advantageous for producing the Ka-band chip antenna because it allows for the creation of highly detailed and precise antenna structures on a microscopic scale, which is essential for the high-frequency operations typical of Ka-band applications. This process also supports the production of antennas with the necessary electrical properties, like the reflection coefficient and gain, due to the fine control over material properties and layer thicknesses that this advanced semiconductor manufacturing technology provides.

How do the bandwidth and gain figures for your antenna compare to industry standards, and what could this mean for future 5G designs? Achieving a bandwidth percentage of 52% and an antenna gain of approximately -6 dBi indicates a significant level of efficiency and performance for the Ka-band chip antenna, especially when considering the compact size of the antenna. These metrics are quite competitive in the industry, and they suggest that such antennas are well-suited for integration into 5G systems, where high efficiency in a small form factor is crucial. This could influence future 5G designs by providing a model for integrating high-performance antennas into a range of devices without significantly increasing their size or altering their form factor.

What CMOS technology advancements might improve antenna performance, and how could they impact millimeter-wave applications? Future developments in CMOS technology that could enhance antenna bandwidth and gain performance include further miniaturization of CMOS feature sizes, which would allow for even more precise antenna designs. Additionally, improvements in the materials used in CMOS processes could lead to better electrical properties, such as increased resistivity or permittivity, which would directly improve antenna performance. These innovations could enable the creation of chip antennas that not only meet but exceed the performance requirements for emerging applications in the millimeter-wave frequency bands, thereby advancing the field of wireless communications.

The presentation did not seem to mention the height of the substrate. Could you please provide information on the height of the substrate, especially for metal6? The structure is composed of six metal layers (Metal1 to Metal6, including the top metal layer) separated by silicon dioxide and a silicon (Si) substrate. In the 0.18μm CMOS process, the top metal layer (Metal6) is designed as the antenna layer, with a thickness of 2.34μm, while the thickness of the Si substrate is 500μm.

Generally, is the first layer the metal antenna layer, and the second layer the ground layer? In the layer stack, the ground is not directly below the metal layer. Could you please explain the reason for this? In this high-precision chip process, we designate the Metal 1 layer as the ground layer, which is crucial for the overall stability and performance of the chip. For the metal antenna layer, we select the highest layer, Metal 6, as this configuration significantly enhances the radiation efficiency and signal reception capability of the antenna.

In slides 8 and 10, the authors show simulated dimensions for the metal layer and actual fabricated products. After comparing, I would like to ask about the height difference, if any, between the orange and yellow sections in the schematic diagram on slide 8 when viewed from the side. On the eighth slide, the yellow color represents Metal 6. The height of Metal 6 is 10.14μm, and its thickness is 2.34μm. The orange color surrounding the antenna is Metal 1, which serves as the ground layer. The orange on both sides represents the density dummy required for the process, with a total height of 9.39μm.
