Bringing this context to India, the crisis is even more acute. India has a massive deaf population estimated at roughly 70 million individuals, which is about 6.3% of our population. Approximately 18 million people have severe hearing impairments and are dependent on sign language although only a subset uses standardized ISL daily.
However, we face a critical Interpreter Shortage. There are only an estimated 250 to 350 certified ISL interpreters in the entire country. This results in a staggering ratio imbalance where hundreds of thousands of users rely on a single interpreter, making human interpretation impossible for daily interactions. |
