	In an SOI based-type waveguide, guiding of light will occurs in the core of silicon in which it is separated from the silicon substrate with a layer of silicon oxide that acts as lower cladding. An example of the commonly used waveguide is the rib waveguide in which the geometry of the waveguide is shown in Figure 2. So, from Figure 2 you can see that etching takes place as shown from the arrow.
