How COAP Works. CoAP specifies four message types to support both reliable and non-reliable communication. Confirmable (CON), Non-confirmable (NON), Acknowledgment (ACK), and Reset (RST). A CON-type message ensures reliability by requiring the receiver to respond with an ACK carrying the same Message ID (MID). If the receiver encounters an error, it replies with a RST message. When reliability is not required, such as in periodic sensor updates, a NON-type message is used without ACK.
