The goal of Phase I is to rejoin the original shortest-path backbone as quickly as possible. Within Ku, it identifies healthy nodes that still lie on the original shortest path to the destination, then finds a suitable cross-boundary relay pair so traffic can make a short hop across the boundary and graft back onto the backbone. Once traffic has rejoined the backbone, repair stops immediately and subsequent forwarding continues along the original shortest path, because the pre-failure shortest path is already globally optimal and stable; what we need is only a temporary bypass around a small failure region.
