From a systemic standpoint, what is the rib-type based waveguide is used for? The purpose why rib waveguide is chosen is because light confinement is better in rib waveguide and to make the device active, rib waveguide is needed which required negative and positive terminal. This is the only waveguide with tunable function. This active waveguide analysis can be useful for active device such as tunable optical attenuator, tunable phase shifter, optical switch, micro-ring modulator, tunable filter.
