How many ONUs can be placed in a ring ? Since there are CWDM demux, CWDM combiner and 1x2 splitter inside each ONU, how much insertion loss from OLT to the last ONU ? Does it affect the network utilization and throughput ? Theoretically, maximum number of ONUs that can be supported are 256 with increased optical power. Assuming a 20 km trunk feeder fiber (0.25 dB/km loss), the first ONU is 20 km away from the OLT, and the last ONU is 23.2 km away from the OLT (ring circumference is about 3.2 km; 1 km diameter) and OLT Tx optical power is + 2 dBm; the power measured at the last ONU is -26.1 dBm. Hence with DS Rx (APD w/FEC) sensitivity of – 28.5 dBm, the total number of ONUs that can be adequately supported is equal to 16 ONUs. Therefore it doesn’t effect network utilization and throughput.
