As shown in the figure below, for non-stand alone scenario, UE connect to core network through eNB and en-gNB. 4G station used to transfer signalling data while 5G station used to transfer user data. UE needs to maitain both connection when connect to the network.

There are 03 types of bearers defined by 3GPP specifications: MCG – RLC bearers only in Master Cell Group; SCG – RLC bearers only in Secondary Cell Group and Split Bearer with RLC bearers in both Cell Group. Split Bearers for multi-connectivity have been observed to increase efficiency in LTE system significantly

Most researchers focus on utilizing the downlink data path and made significant findings that Split Bearer not only improves throughput but also optimizes UEs satisfaction. Research papers also need to develop their algorithm to distribute downlink data packets for eNB and en-gNB to improve fairness while maximizing the total throughput utility. However the algorithm is complex and depends on simulation to show their efficiency.

We propose a solution for monitoring channel quality and simplifying the process of switching between enabling and disabling uplink split, aiming to ensure seamless quality of service. Instead of evaluating the solution on simulations, we apply it to a real-world system to provide a more accurate and objective evaluation.

The uplink split function is enabled/disable by configurations at PDCP-Config from Radio Resource Control Layer to UE. By enabling the uplink split function at state (2) and (3), UE can send data through both station depends on its data rate. By apply uplink split bearer, we can force UE to use eNB as primary path, to overcome the bad channel quality situation.

There are two main techniques for monitoring channel quality and making switching decisions. We optimize the threshold parameter set based on real-world testing to select the most effective parameters that best reflect the actual channel quality.

In case UE moving from eNB to eNB, the uplink split tunnel information must be informed to the target eNB to keep maintaining data path

In case UE moving from en-gNB to new en-gNB, the uplink split tunnel information must be informed to the eNB, after that it is update to target en-gNB.

Evaluation
ICACT20250076 Slide.13        [Big Slide] Chrome Click!!
We conduct 02 types of test that is specific location test and route test
ICACT20250076 Slide.14        [Big Slide] Chrome Click!!
All the test results is an average of 200 samples, each sample is recorded every second on test device. The service used in the test is HTTP upload. At good signal strength, the throughput is equivalent to total resource of eNB and en-gNB. At cell-edge position, Uplink Split Bearer helps maintain service quality

In the route test, we enable the uplink split feature all over our network. The test device moved around in between numerous base station with the velocity of 30kmps We use the HTTP uplink service with one sample include 30 seconds of uploading and 10 seconds off

The recorded test results show a significant increase in total uplink throughput, with nearly 50% contributed by 5G radio resources. This demonstrates effective utilization of radio resources from both base stations.

Conclusion and Future Work
ICACT20250076 Slide.18        [Big Slide] Chrome Click!!
This paper has proposed our implementation of Uplink Split function within 4G and 5G NSA network. Our solution ensures the efficiency with a simple and robust algorithm while still improving throughput performance and maintaining user satisfaction. Furthermore, we develop the solution for mobility problems which is relevant for real-system implementation. Our future work will focus more on optimizing data switching algorithm, explore fully split brearers including downlink.
